Community Outreach

Resurrection students work toward a mission of building a community that reaches out to the poor and homeless, helping to build a world where peace and social justice reign.

Within each classroom, students and teachers support the community on several levels. During Advent, upper grade students "adopt" and provide for the needs of a local family. Food and clothing collections take place for St. Vincent DePaul. Several times a year students prepare bagged lunches for InnVision, a homeless shelter in San Jose, and students contribute money during Lent for use in overseas missions. The school's outreach program also includes pennies for leukemia research, student-created holiday decorations for local residential care facilities, and holiday cards for the veterans at the Palo Alto Veteran's Hospital. Hats, mittens, and socks are collected for at-risk teenagers, Valentine cards are made for parishioners, and in each classroom, a Lenten cross is decorated with notes of random acts of kindness.

Students in 5th through 8th grade are asked to complete service hours as part of the overall curriculum.

5th grade - 10 service hours a year
6th grade - 15 service hours a year
7th grade - 20 service hours a year
8th grade - 30 service hours a year

2007-2008 Community Service Outreach

In the 2007-08 school year the Res community made an outstanding and heartwarming effort to support the school's Community Outreach Program. Check out the below list of outreach efforts accomplished in the 2007-2008 school year.

  • Any Soldier Program
Hundreds of DVD's, popcorn, candy, and hot chocolate was sent to soldiers abroad via the "Any Soldier" program.

  • Clothes, Shoes, School Supplies, Toys, and Books collected for Innvison and Sunnyvale FISH
New for the 2007-2008 school year is the additional collection of clothes, shoes, toys, and books throughout the year for needy families at InnVision. Over 100 pairs of shoes were collected and donated to those in need through Sunnyvale FISH, and hundreds of games and toys, along with school supplies were collected for InnVision children.

  • Halloween Costume Drive
What a wonderful outpouring of support for our 1st ever Halloween Costume Drive. Over 225 costumes were collected, enough that InnVision held a special Halloween event for families to come in and pick out a costume for their children. Several of our student council members attended the event and it was a beautiful day full of happy children as Spiderman, Belle, ballerinas and firemen! Thank you all for your support. To see the smiles on the children and parent's faces was worth it all!!

  • Lenten Mission Cans brought in $3,200 for our sister school!
Congratulations to all our students for raising $3,200 for our sister school, Christ the King in Nicaragua! This money was raised with the Lenten Mission cans and the penny drive prior to the Halloween party. Sr. Sandy Price was able to use last year's penny drive to build Christ the King School. She surprised us this week by announcing with this year's penny drive there is enough money to build another school and still provide supplies to Christ the King!!

Did you know that in the past 8 years, the school's students have raised over $14,467 in penny drives for the missionary work in Nicaragua! As a result, three schools have been built, and school supplies and uniforms were provided. We're working on a fourth school!

  • InnVision Thanksgiving, Valentine's Day, and Easter Lunch Program
What began in the 2003-2004 school year with 3rd grade and 60 prepared lunches has now grown to 331 lunches for Thanksgiving, 100 Valentine "Party in a Bag" bags, and 188 Easter Baskets in the spring.

2006-2007 Community Service Outreach

  • InnVision Thanksgiving, Valentine's Day, and Easter Lunch Program

The number of classes continues to grow; this year students in 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th grades joined as a group and made over 343 Thanksgiving lunches, 90 Valentine's Day bags, and 120 Easter baskets.

2005-2006 Community Service Outreach

  • InnVision Thanksgiving and Easter Lunch Program
Students in 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades joined together during the year to make over 200 Thanksgiving lunches, and 90 Easter baskets made out of shoeboxes and filled with toiletries and homemade cards for families at InnVision.

2004-2005 Community Service Outreach

  • Tsunami Support
Resurrection School students raised over $1,250 in January for Jeans Day. This money was given to Catholic Relief Services. They have made a commitment to provide immediate shelter and healthcare to those in need. Additionally, every child in the school colored in 100-500 hearts, a heart for every single life lost in Southeast Asia. These hearts were displayed in the Farana Center. To keep these victims and their families in our hearts, we stopped once a day when the bell was randomly rung, for a minute of silence and prayer.

  • InnVision Thanksgiving Support Students in 3rd & 4th grade put together over 120 lunches to be delivered to InnVision. Students decorated lunch bags for the Thanksgiving holiday and then filled the bags with snacks, fruit, and sandwiches. This was a great opportunity for the children to give back to the community!

2003-2004 Community Service Outreach

  • InnVision Thanksgiving Support
We kicked off our Community Outreach efforts in a more formal effort in the 2003-2004 school year. The third grade class created 60 Thanksgiving lunches for the homeless at the Montgomery Street InnVision shelter in San Jose.
